Just spend an Undisclosed Amount on 2 pairs of leather gloves in fun colors last week after not having gloves without holes/that even fit for 5 years. & now I feel even more justified 🙏 no rAGrets 💯
Desperate for the blue and orange fingerless pair! I have a beloved collection of vintage leather gloves, that are on my hands from September-March…but those fingerless beauties must be in my rotation!
Not this turning up in the inbox on the day I had an ebay search for Dents gloves open in another tab!! Those multicolour button ones are delicious.
I think the appeal of gloves comes from the feeling that putting on a proper pair is almost like a miniature, hands-only experience of another era - like you said, having a barrier between your hands and work and, while gloved, not being able to do things like text on a phone. Even the gloves which don't present this 'problem, the most 'modern' glove aka fingerless ones, feel distinctly retro in their own way even if it's 1980s Madonna instead of 1950s debutante and I love that.
I used to go to the Carolina Amato showroom in the 80s when they had sample sales and buy all kinds of beautiful leather gloves. They became something of a signature. My friends thought I was weird but I thought they were weird. Who could resist these gorgeous object? Alas, I had to give that up because I would lose every single one of them.
When I saw this Substack title in my inbox this morning my first thought was- ha, that reminds me of the leather gloves I bought 9 years ago in Paris. 12 hours later- I am reading and am so fucking tickled that the pair I bought 9 years ago is one of the gloves you included!! Red with white polkadots. The purchase was, at the time (and maybe still) not very *me* but it became a part of my winters in NYC and everywhere I've lived since. Instant silly fun. Such a fond memory/keepsake/forever piece. My only regret is not buying more. Next time. Also: Grace Jones so good. As always- thank you, I so enjoy reading your stuff.
I got to meet Donna Karan this summer in the hamptons. She was with Jude Law. He asked me if the loo was co-ed. I nearly passed out.
First time I met DK, I was in awe of her major Queens/LI accent...I didn't see her, but heard the voice, turned around...and voila...!
I have so many gloves I need to be better about wearing! Long black leather gloves with a vintage coat 🤌🏻
Best part of NYC winter is having a legit excuse to wear gloves for grabbing a subway pole!!!
Also, thanks for the Frantic mention!!! Def recommend checking out some 80’s French films on Criterion for more leather!
