Ayo Edebiri’s Celtics baseball cap / @ayoedebiri

Last week, there was a lot of talk of Ayo Edebiri’s delicious gray Loewe suit. Between the elegant slouchiness and that long gilded feather tie that swung to the earth’s core, it was a hit. The look recalled the baggy suited Julia Roberts at the 1990 Golden Globes. In the BTS getting-ready photos, Edebiri wore a corduroy cap embroidered with “Boston Celtics” and later sported it to the after-party. The actor grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and attended Boston Latin School. The little dollop of hometown pride was charming and cool—a lovely, chill smirk to a killer, formal get-up.

The cap and suit look has graced the skulls of Hollywood men in the ‘80s and ‘90s. A cursory search shows the likes of Billy Bob Thornton and Robin Williams who wore their baseball caps on the red carpet, screenings, and award show events.

Jason Diamond
of The Melt wrote an excellent piece for GQ about the group Boyz II Men, who wore prim blazers with baseball caps. (He also cites David Letterman as an avid suit ‘n cap wearer.)

Women also have dabbled in the look. There’s a fabulous image of a beaming Lauren Hutton wearing a Yankees hat at the Armani Show at Rockefeller Center in 1980. She is in major formal wear: a slickly cut black suit with a crisp tuxedo shirt and a white bowtie. There’s the Fred Astaire high-waisted trousers for that extra old-school, dandified oomph. But on her head, balanced like a lazy crown? A lopsided, floppy Yankees cap that is as flat as a pancake! How delightful is the funky dichotomy between absolute polish and self-styled blasé? Note: Hutton is historically great at injecting a cheeky wink into her wardrobe: Peep her Nike
